Big Lottery funding was secured by TTVS in November 2014 to finance a new four year project supporting the health and well-being of elderly people in North Devon. The areas of Torridge, Ilfracombe and South Molton have been identified as key targets. Under the banner of TorrAGE, this has been named ‘Ageing Well’.
In the first year of operation 1:1 befriending will be the cornerstone of the Ageing Well project, with local volunteers visiting clients on a regular basis to offer companionship and a listening ear. This may extend to short trips out if the client would like to do this.
Weekly well-being watch calls will provide added contact for those who are particularly lonely and isolated. Sometimes a telephone call can be just the thing to give someone an encouraging lift in mood.
In the second year we will look to extend our remit to offer ‘help at home’ assistance. This may include offering services like gardening, cleaning and small household jobs.
Gentle exercise classes, including Tai Chi, will help with confidence, balance and general fitness. We have a very experienced instructor in Tai Chi who is currently running five classes around the area. We have recently started a class in South Molton based in the YMCA Centre (behind the swimming pool). Chair based exercise groups have started in Westward Ho! and will run on trial basis for the autumn term.
Social and craft groups will be established to meet particular local needs and will encourage the over 60’s to get ‘out and about’ and make new friends. These activity groups may include craft & sewing, an introduction to IT or sing-a-long afternoons and more. A Sew together craft group launched in July 2015.
